Frequently Asked Questions & Answers
1. Do I need to know how to paint?
Of course not! This is about fun and self expression! We always have staff on hand to offer any assistance or helpful suggestions. Additionally we have books with ideas and samples as well as step-by-step instruction on how you can create a piece of pottery you will be proud to show off!
2. Do you offer classes?
We offer workshops for adults and kids! Instruction is given on a specific project with step-by-step directions in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We always have knowledgeable staff on hand to help you achieve the look you want!
3. Do I need an appointment to come in and paint?
You can come in any time to paint in our “paint-you-own-pottery” studio. We do recommend calling ahead for parties of 6 or more so we can have a table ready for you!
4. Are the finished pieces food-safe?
Absolutely! We clear-glaze every piece so you get back a fully usable piece of pottery! Hand-washing is recommended and no microwaves please.
5. Can I put them in my microwave and dishwasher?
We do not recommend dishwashers or microwaves for your works of art.
6. How long does it take to paint a piece?
Most projects can be completed within 1 hour. You are welcome to stay as long as you like, or if you need us to place your piece in our “work-in-progress” section you can come back another day. Additional studio fees will apply.
7. What types of bisqueware do you offer?
We are proud to offer a huge selection of utilitarian table and serving-ware, as well as a large selection of home décor- kids figurines- piggybanks and holiday items! If you don’t see what you are looking for- ask us- chances are we can get it for you!
8. Is this like “ceramics”? Do I sand seams on the greenware?
Our bisqueware has already been through the firing process by our supplier- we do not make it on site. It is all ready to be painted!
9. Can my social group meet at your studio?
Absolutely! We have a large party room that is perfect for any social gathering- and painting pottery is a wonderful way to spend time with friends and colleagues. Group rates apply.
10. Is there a separate studio fee?
There is a$5.00 studio fee for each person painting for 1 hour, additional hour fees are $2.50/per person and return studio fees are $3.00 for first hour and additional hour fees of $2.50 thereafter.
11. How long does it take to get my piece back?
Your piece of pottery will be ready to pick up 1 week from the day of completion. Due to space - we ask that you pick your pottery up in a timely manner. Clay Dreaming is not responsible for pieces left over 60 days.
12. How old does my child need to be to paint pottery?
If your child can sit in a chair and hold a paint brush- he /she can paint pottery! We have a large selection of kid friendly items, and special times devoted to kids painting!
13. Do you do Birthday parties?
We do great birthday parties! We have a separate party room that is perfect for any party-or event you can dream up! We can accommodate up to 25 people in the party room- or you can rent out the entire studio for your event!
14. Do you do fundraising events?
We love to do fundraising and have several options available to you and your organization to have a fun and successful fundraiser.
15. Do you take special orders?
We would love to bring your ideas to life! We have an in-house artist who can help you create the perfect piece for any occasion!
Paint Your Own Pottery Studio
1. Do I have to sign up for a class to use the clay studio?
While we highly recommend you taking a class -- we offer classes for those just starting out during the day and evening!. If you are already knowledgeable in pottery- you may sign up for an independent study.
2. How old does my child have to be to take a class?
We offer classes for children as young as 5 years old.
3. Can I learn both wheel throwing and hand building in one class?
Our classes are designed to teach all students all aspects of working with clay, both wheel throwing and hand building are incorporated into the class as well as glazing.
4. Are there open studio times?
Open Studio times are available to all registered students in the wet clay studio. Students may come in and work on their projects and further their knowledge of a clay studio. Open Studio times are always posted.
5. What type of clay do you use?
We use stoneware and porcelain clay bodies that are fired to a cone 6 oxidation in electric kilns.
6. Do you offer workshops?
For alternative firing techniques such as pit firing and Raku, surface decorations and sculpture and more, we offer some very interesting workshops for the potter looking to broaden his/her style or learn something new.
7. Do you offer private lessons?
Yes, we offer several different options in private lessons, including individual- couple- parent & child, or group. For the student who wishes to see the process through to the end we offer a 4 lesson package deal. Group rates apply to groups of 4 or more.
8. Can I have a clay party?
We would love to host your clay party! We offer clay parties for children and adults. Due to space and wheel availability- clay parties are limited to 8 guests.
9. Do you rent studio space?
We have a limited number of studios available to rent. If there are no vacancies in our studios- we recommend signing up for independent study.
10. Can I make pottery at home and pay you a firing fee?
Due to different clay types we prefer to only fire pottery that is made on premises with clay from Clay Dreaming Pottery Studio.
11. Do you make your own glazes?
We have a wonderful and broad selection of glazes that we make in our own studio. All glazing and firing fees are included in the cost of clay purchased at Clay Dreaming Pottery Studio, and are available to all registered students and independent study.
12. Will my finished work be food safe?
YES- all of our high fired glazes are lead free and food safe. (Raku fired items are not food safe)
13. Does the glaze studio contain toxic chemicals, such as lead?
We do mix chemicals to make our glazes. The chemicals are stored per regulations in safe containers in our glaze room. Young children are not allowed in our clay studio without an adult or instructor.
14. Do you do Raku firing?
While we do not do raku firings on site- we do have workshops where you can bring your prepared pottery to be fired at an off-site location.
1. Do you have items for sale in your gallery?
All of the items in our gallery are for sale. Most are made on site by students- and independent study. We do also carry the work of a few artists who are friends of the studio with their own studio.
2. Can I exhibit at the gallery?
We welcome pottery to be sold on a consignment basis. All work must be approved by owner and/ or gallery manager prior to placement in gallery.

We are located at 186 Cabot Street in Downtown Beverly, our building is the former RMV!
2. Is there parking?
We have some off-street parking available behind the building in spaces clearly marked for Clay Dreaming only. We ask you to respect our neighbors and do not park in their marked spaces. Otherwise there is ample meter parking.
3. What are your hours?
We are open 7 days a week! Sun 11-5; Mon-Tues-Wed-Thurs 10-8pm; and Fri-Sat 10-9pm. We are also open many school holidays- call ahead to check!
4. Do you sell gift certificates?
We sell gift certificates in any denomination that you require! Just ask at the front desk.
